Competitive angling for women on Lake Winnibigoshish since 1998.

It wasn't all that long ago if you saw a woman in a boat, it was a rarity. Even more rare was to see several women fishing by themselves. The annual Women on Winnie Fishing Tournament is changing that rare sighting of two women, fishing in the boat with, gasp, no men.

Dee Jacobson, manager of a popular Lake Winnie area restaurant in 1998, thought up the concept of a women's only fishing contest. Living here in the North woods, Dee realized many ladies like to fish. She wanted to create an event on Lake Winnibigoshish for these ladies to showcase their fishing talents and hopefully attract more women to try the sport.

Each and every year, the growth and participation has increased in the tournament and every person involved can't wait until that last Sunday in June.

The inaugural year there were 8 boats, now we are now averaging anywhere from 25 to 30 boats each year, and looking for more women to participate. It is a very competitive tournament and everyone who takes part wants to win.

With cash and prizes donated by local businesses and major fishing tackle companies, the ladies can compare their accomplishments to many of the men's tournaments in the area.

The tournament allows women to weigh in walleyes, northern pike, perch, and bass. There is equal value for each species which allows all participants to possibly cash a check in three divisions and five categories.

Come join the fishing fun!
